Risk APPETITE & THE AI TEST

Are you struggling to make the case for leveraging AI in your Risk and Compliance Programs? Is your organization in 'wait and see' mode? Don't miss the opportunity to enhance your program responsibly - leveraging Risk Appetite - and measuring against Risk Tolerance.

Last week I wrote about Risk Appetite as one of the most underused levers available to Risk and Compliance leaders.

AI may be one of the best tests of whether we actually mean it.

Risk and Compliance practitioners are trained to be cautious—and we should be. Skepticism has value in our profession. AI introduces real risks that require thoughtful governance, clear parameters, testing, and human oversight.

But we cannot afford to linger in a state of analysis paralysis.

The question shouldn't be “Are we willing to use AI?”

It should be “Where and how can we use AI responsibly to make our Risk and Compliance programs more effective?”

Consider the potential across just a few program components:

Policy Management — Shift from drafting to operationalizing.
AI can help draft, compare, map, and source policies against underlying regulatory requirements—while keeping Risk and Compliance professionals responsible for judgment and final decisions. Shift their time and expertise from drafting language to helping business partners operationalize requirements.

Regulatory Change — Shift from volume to visibility.
AI can scan enormous amounts of regulatory information, identify developments potentially applicable to your products, services, and customers, and accelerate impact assessments. Shift Risk and Compliance resources from processing volume to pinpointing where change actually matters.

Monitoring & Testing — Shift from sampling to insight.
Reduce high-cost, low-impact manual assessments and sample-based testing. Leverage AI to analyze much larger swathes of data, identify patterns and anomalies, and focus practitioners on the activity that warrants deeper review.

This isn't just about efficiency. The speed and scale AI can deliver allow Risk and Compliance professionals to identify weaknesses—and strengths—earlier, expanding coverage and improving program effectiveness.

And there is a bottom-line argument here, too.

Technology doesn't have to generate revenue to create value. Reducing the cost of Risk and Compliance, increasing coverage, identifying risk earlier, and freeing talented professionals from manual work all contribute to the bottom line.

There is risk in adopting AI too quickly.

But there is also risk in waiting too long.

Govern it. Test it. Put appropriate guardrails around it. But use it.

That's what Risk Appetite is for.
